Alberta Wileen (Osten) Goodwin

Alberta Wileen Goodwin, age 83, of Palestine, Texas, passed away unexpectedly in a house fire on Tuesday, the 10th day of October 2023. “Berta”, as she was affectionately known, was born in Morrison, Oklahoma, on the 7th day of May 1940 to parents Virgil Osten and Lela Williams Osten. 

Berta served her community as a home health nurse for many years, providing compassionate care to patients in their homes. Her selfless devotion to this calling was a testament to her kind and caring nature. She had a heart that was always willing to go the extra mile for her patients, a trait that endeared her to all those she cared for.

Before her health declined, Berta was an active member of First Methodist Church of Palestine, and her faith was an essential part of her life. She devoted many hours to the church, participating in the choir, Grief Share, and mission activities.

Berta was a social butterfly, always ready with a warm smile and a hug. She had an open heart and an open home, always welcoming friends, family, and even strangers with open arms. Her favorite dessert was Braum’s chocolate chip ice cream.

Never one to shy away from a good time, Berta was an avid square dancer. She loved the rhythm, the camaraderie, and the sheer joy that came with each dance. She also had a passion for quilting, creating beautiful pieces that were as warm and inviting as her personality. Her flower garden was another testament to her nurturing spirit, where she spent countless hours tending to her plants with the same care and dedication she showed towards her family and patients.  She always enjoyed the beautiful birds that frequented her gardens quite often.

Alberta’s legacy will live on in the hearts and memories of all those she touched with her generous spirit. She will be dearly missed but her life will continue to serve as a beacon of compassion and love for all who knew her.  Berta leaves behind her son, James Adams of Palestine, Texas; daughter, Angela Mills and husband Kerry of Flower Mound, Texas; brothers, Bub Osten and wife Maxine, and Ray Osten.  She will also be missed by her grandson, Bryan Mills and wife Jennifer, in addition to numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service to honor Berta Goodwin’s life is to be conducted at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, the 21st day of October 2023 at First Methodist Church of Palestine, with Rev. Geoffrey Lightsey officiating the service.  Interment will follow in Broyles Chapel Cemetery.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family beginning one hour prior to the start of the service at First Methodist Church of Palestine.
