James Lewis Slaughter, age 80, known to friends and family as Jim, passed away on May 30, 2023, after a lengthy illness. Born in San Antonio, Texas, on March 8, 1943. Jim leaves behind a legacy of love, adventure, and service to his country.
Jim was a proud veteran of the United States Marines, having served two tours in the Vietnam War. His dedication to his country was evident in the way he carried himself and the stories he shared with those close to him. After his time in the military, Jim embarked on a successful career as a parts manager for General Motors, where he earned the top salesman award for his outstanding work.
In his younger years, Jim was a talented athlete who excelled in various sports. He maintained a lifelong love for sports, particularly his favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys. Jim also enjoyed bowling, golfing, and spending time outdoors fishing. His competitive spirit was evident in his love for playing cards and board games, often engaging in friendly matches with family and friends.
A true lover of history, Jim spent countless hours reading and learning about the past. His knowledge and passion for the subject were evident in the engaging conversations he would have with others, always eager to share his insights and discoveries.
Jim was also known for his love of travel, having explored the world and experienced its many wonders. This sense of adventure was a driving force in his life, inspiring those around him to seek out new experiences and embrace the unknown. A friendly and caring neighbor, Jim enjoyed sitting on his porch and visiting with those who lived nearby. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He joined in Heaven his parents, brother, and baby sister.
Jim was a devoted family man leaving behind to treasure the memories are his loving wife of 54 years, Marilyn Slaughter, and their children, Kelli Roth and husband Clay, Debbie Williams and husband Howard, Laurie Harper and husband Lonnie, Lisa Vercellino, Wayne Wolfe and wife Melba, Richard Slaughter and wife Kafi, and Dan Schaefer and wife Heather. He was also a doting grandfather to his seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and leaves behind numerous other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
A funeral service to celebrate the life of James Slaughter is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, June 3, 2023, in the Rhone Memorial Chapel.
Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the start of service at Rhone Funeral Home.
The family will gather for a private burial at the Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas at a later date.
