Lee Dowden Mitchell, age 83, of Palestine, Texas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, the 2nd day of November 2025, at Dogwood Trails Assisted Living. Ms. Mitchell was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon on the 27th day of December 1941 to parents Milton Dowden and Eula Underwood. She was raised in a nurturing environment by her mother and father, a Missionary Baptist Preacher, who instilled in her the values of love and compassion. Her commitment to education led her to earn a bachelor's degree in education, which she put to use in her fulfilling career as an art teacher.
Her love for art extended well beyond the classroom; she found joy in painting, often capturing the serene beauty of nature. She cherished her time outdoors, whether it was feeling the sand beneath her feet at the beach or gazing upon the tranquil waters from her lake house on Toledo Bend.
Music and laughter were the melodies of Ms. Mitchell's life. Her love for singing resonated in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of hearing her voice and her laughter was infectious, a sound that could light up a room. Ms. Mitchell's sense of style was as bold and vibrant as her personality. She never ventured out without a full face of makeup, her hair impeccably styled, and her attire adorned with her favorite bright colors, especially red and turquoise. Her love for jewelry and all things that sparkled was a reflection of the light she carried within her. A devout Christian, Ms. Mitchell lived her faith through her actions.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brother Melvin Dowden.
Ms. Mitchell was a cherished mother to her daughters and son, Sharon Aitken, Nicole Carroll (Roger), Whitney Echart (Nathan), and Clay Mitchell (Wende); a beloved sister to Floretta West; and an adored grandmother to Amy Trigg, Clay Carroll, Clint Carroll, Arielle Aitken, Edwardo Abihabib, Konnor Aitken, Justin Abihabib, Margot Abihabib, Kennedy Echart, Gracey Carroll, Addison Echart, and Jace Carroll. She will also be dearly missed by her numerous great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends. Ms. Mitchell's memory will be cherished and kept alive by her loving family and all those whose lives she touched.
