Martha Bell Swanson, age 77, of Denson Springs, Texas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, the 9th day of February 2024, at Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, Texas. Mrs. Swanson “Sis” was born on the 29th day of January 1947 alongside her twin brother Donald “Bud” Brewer, in Mena, Arkansas, to parents Lillian Elmer Brewer and Edith Mae McKinzey.
Mrs. Swanson's passion for the natural world was evident in her love for gardens and flowers. Her hands, always tender with the earth, cultivated not just plants but also the hearts of those she met. An avid outdoorswoman, she enjoyed hunting and fishing. Her competitive spirit shone brightly during lively evenings spent playing cards and board games, where she was a formidable opponent and a gracious victor.
As one of fifteen siblings, Martha developed a profound sense of family and community early on. Her friendly demeanor was a beacon of light to all who knew her, and her selfless nature was evident in every aspect of her life. Mrs. Swanson’s love for crochet was not just a hobby but a way of weaving warmth and love into the fabric of her family and friends' lives. She was a cherished member of the Muse Missionary Baptist Church, where she found great joy and solace in the fellowship and the sweet voices of children singing hymns.
Among her most treasured roles were those of a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, imparting wisdom, laughter, and memories that will be held dear for generations to come.
She joins her parents, Lillian and Edith Brewer; and twelve brothers, Donald Brewer, Johnny Brewer, Jack Brewer, David Brewer, Sammy Brewer, Douglas Brewer, Leo Brewer, Joe Brewer, Ricky Brewer, Jimmy Brewer, Alvin Brewer, and Freddy Brewer in Heaven.
Martha created a home filled with love and kindness, where laughter was shared. She leaves behind her loving husband Fred Swanson of 59 years to carry her memory forward. Her daughters, Marsha Ann Swanson Jones and husband Eddie, Michele "Shelli" Mengel and husband Phil Lane, and Robin Nave, along with her son, Johnny Swanson were the center of her world. She also leaves behind her sisters, Lily May Sanders, Betty Lou May, twenty-grandchildren, twelve-great grandchildren, and five-great-great grandchildren. She instilled in them the values of generosity and compassion that she lived by every day.
Friends are invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock until seven o’clock in the evening on Monday, the 12th day of February 2024 at Rhone Funeral Home.
Graveside services to celebrate Martha Swanson’s life are to be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 13th day of February 2024, at Denson Springs Cemetery. Bro. Jesse Moore will be officiating the service.
