Shirley Whitwell, a beacon of kindness and generosity, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on August 17, 1942, in Montalba, Texas, Shirley was the cherished daughter of Luther Wilbur Schitoskey and Mabel Edith Wardell. Her warm presence and loving nature left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her.
Throughout her life, Shirley was known as the sweetest person ever, a testament to her unwavering kindness. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and sister, whose primary joy was found in the laughter and love of her family.
Shirley's heart was always in the kitchen, where she expressed her love through the meals she lovingly prepared for her family. An active and devoted member of Friendship Baptist Church, Shirley's faith was the cornerstone of her life. Her love for Jesus shone brightly through her actions and her dedication to her church.
In every role she played—whether as a mother, grandmother, sister, or friend—Shirley exuded a gentle kindness that made people feel loved and valued. Her selfless nature was evident in the way she lived her life, always putting others before herself and giving generously of her time and resources. Those who knew Shirley will remember her for this loving generosity.
She is preceded by her parents Luther and Mabel Schitoskey; daughter, Tammy Lorene Whitwell; son, Calvin Scott Whitwell; sister, Grace Madewell; and brother Fred Schitoskey.
Shirley's legacy is carried on by her loving husband of 66 years, William “Skip” Whitwell; devoted daughter, Susan Neel and her husband Duane; her sons, Doug Whitwell and wife Leslie, and Bruce Whitwell and wife Teresa. Her sister, Hilda Graham and husband Gerald also survive her. Shirley's ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren will grow up hearing tales of her loving nature and generosity, ensuring her memory will continue to inspire future generations.
Friends are invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock until seven o’clock in the evening on Friday, March 15, 2024, at Rhone Funeral Home.
Funeral services to celebrate Shirley’s life are to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon, on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Friendship Baptist Church with Bro. Jerry Horine officiating the service. Interment with follow in Rock Church Cemetery in Montalba.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Joshua Whitwell, Andrew Armstrong, Steven Lawrence, Thomas Whitwell, Seth Bowman, and Ken Wilbanks.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorials in memory of Shirley Whitwell can be directed towards Friendship Baptist Church building fund, 7220 FM 860, Montalba, TX 75853.
