Tom Smith, 87, of Palestine, Texas, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2023. He was born on January 19, 1936, in Palestine, Texas to John W. Smith and Mary A. Johnson. Tom spent his formative years growing up with his 9 siblings in Palestine, Texas. He graduated from Flint Hill High School on May 27, 1954. Tom or "Boney" as he was affectionately called by long-time family and friends, proudly served in the United States Army until 1961. His military and veteran status were a significant part of his life, and he was extremely proud to have honorably served his country.
After completing his military career, Tom eventually settled in California. During this time, he worked as a warehouseman while supporting his family. He eventually moved back to Texas where he spent the remainder of his years.
In his spare time, Tom had a variety of hobbies that brought him joy. He was well-known for his green thumb and spent countless hours tending to his garden while nurturing vegetables and fruits for his friends and loved ones. Tom also had a talent for building and completed numerous home construction projects using his expert carpentry skills. Later in life, Tom spent many hours supporting the Oakland Raiders and cheering them on with great enthusiasm. Tom was a worldly, traveled, happy, gifted conversationalist who never met a stranger. He could often be heard whistling a tune or singing a song. Tom found solace and spiritual fulfillment at New Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a long-time member.
Tom was a loving father, uncle, cousin, and friend, and is survived by his sons Tom Smith, Mario Smith (Melinda), Desmond Smith (Kristin), and his daughters Darlene Reed and LaTanya Lynch (Michael). Tom's oldest child, Ronnie Smith, sadly passed away many years ago. Tom is also survived by a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren who will miss him dearly, along with nephews, nieces, and many other family members.
Tom will be deeply missed by his family and friends, and his memory and influence will be greatly cherished by those who loved him.
